Five ways to verify an electrician
The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) is the recognised ID card for the UK's electrotechnical industry, verifying qualifications, experience, identity and occupation. More than 175,000 valid cardholders have been assessed to industry standards. Use whichever check suits your situation — they are all free.
ECS Check card search (desktop)
If you have an individual's ECS registration number, use the ECS Check online search to confirm the card is genuine and current. This is the quickest way for a landlord or letting agent to verify an individual electrician.
ECS Check App (scan a virtual card)
Ask your electrician to show their virtual ECS card in the free MyECS app, then scan the dynamic QR code. The app reads the card in real time and confirms it is valid — preventing cloned or out-of-date paper cards.
ECS Check App (Android)
The same ECS Check verification is available on Android, with free access to the smart-card reader and audit logs. Ideal for contractors and agents checking multiple workers on a job.
CSCS Smart Check app
The CSCS Alliance's Smart Check app verifies cards from all 38 CSCS partner schemes — including ECS — across more than 2.1 million valid cardholders. Use it if you also need to check non-electrical trades on the same site.
Competent Person Scheme register
For notifiable domestic work under Part P, your electrician must belong to a government-authorised Competent Person Scheme (e.g. NAPIT, NICEIC). Search the official register to confirm scheme membership before you book.
ECS Check for businesses & contracts
If you run a letting agency, manage multiple properties or subcontract electrotechnical work, ECS Check offers dedicated services for verifying workers in bulk and keeping audit records.
Clients & contractors (supply chain)
A free-to-use online system that lets main contractors and clients verify the ECS cards of electrotechnical personnel on a project and produce electronic summaries for auditing and reporting.
Employment businesses & agencies
A bulk-checking facility that verifies ECS cardholders and provides JIB recognition of the standards being applied for engagement — required for some contracts.
