Hanging a picture near a switch or socket
Every year electricians are called out to homes where a picture nail, a shelf bracket screw or a curtain rail fixing has punched straight through a live cable buried in the plaster. The rules in BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 Regulation 522.6.202 define exactly where cables are permitted to run behind a wall — and, by extension, where you must never blindly drill or hammer.
Assume every switch and socket has cables above, below and beside it
Cables drop from the ceiling to a switch, rise from the floor to a socket, and run horizontally between accessories at the same height. Never nail or drill into the vertical or horizontal band directly aligned with any switch or socket — and always check the reverse side of the wall, because the safe zones apply to both faces of the plaster.

The green striped areas are outside those safe zones, so cables are less likely there, but you must still use a detector because old wiring and DIY additions rarely follow the rules.
The four cable safe zones — drilling no-go areas
BS 7671 permits buried cables to run within these zones. For a homeowner with a hammer or drill, that means these are the four places a cable is most likely to be hiding.
- 1. Vertical zone — a band directly above and below every switch, socket or accessory, running full height and the same width as the accessory plate.Do not drill here.
- 2. Horizontal zone — a band left and right of every accessory, running the full width of the wall and the same height as the accessory plate.Do not drill here.
- 3. Perimeter zone — within 150 mm of the ceiling, the floor or an internal wall junction.Do not drill here.
- 4. Direct line — a straight line between an accessory and its corresponding accessory on the far side of the wall (a socket and its back-to-back partner in the next room).Do not drill here.
Before the nail or drill goes in
- 1.Look up, down and sideways from the accessory. Mentally draw a vertical line the same width as the switch or socket plate up and down from every accessory, and a horizontal line the same height as the plate across the wall. Those bands are the cable safe zones — the most likely place a cable is hiding. Avoid them.
- 2.Check the reverse side of the wall. A socket in the kitchen may share the same plaster as a light switch in the hallway. If there is an accessory directly behind where you want to drill, the cable safe zones overlap — treat both sides as one danger area.
- 3.Use a decent cable/pipe detector — a three-mode unit (metal, live cable, wood stud). Cheap detectors miss dead cables, twin-and-earth deep in dot-and-dab plasterboard, and copper pipe.
- 4.Test the detector on a known live cable first (near the socket you plan to avoid), so you know it's working — batteries fail silently.
- 5.Turn off the circuit at the consumer unit if in any doubt. A live cable that has been drilled is far more dangerous than a dead one. Isolating first is free insurance.
- 6.Use the shortest fixing that will do the job. A 25 mm picture pin is far less likely to reach a cable than a 60 mm shelf bracket screw. Cables in safe zones must be at least 50 mm deep or mechanically protected — but plasterers and previous "improvers" don't always follow that.
A safer height for pictures near switches and sockets
UK switches are typically ~1,450 mm above the floor and sockets ~450 mm. If you can hang a picture whose nail sits between those two heights (roughly 700–1,300 mm), and at least 150 mm to one side of any accessory, you are outside the main cable safe zones and the odds of hitting a cable drop dramatically. Combine that with a cable detector and a short pin, and you're doing everything a professional would.
If you do hit a cable
Stop. Do not pull the nail or screw out — leave it in place, it may be the only thing stopping the conductors touching. Turn the circuit off at the consumer unit and call an electrician. If the RCD has tripped, that is the protection working correctly; leave it tripped until the cable is inspected. Never just "reset it and hope".
