Home office electrical safety

Working from home means more monitors, chargers, printers and heaters running from sockets that were never designed to power a full workstation. Here is how to keep your home office safe and reliable.

Warning signs to act on

A hot plug, warm socket face, discoloured brown marks around a socket, buzzing from a charger, or an RCD that trips whenever the printer or heater fires up — stop using the socket and get it checked. These are the early signs of overload, loose terminations or failing equipment.

Three rules for your desk

One 13 A socket ≈ 3 kW total

A single 13 A socket can safely supply about 3,000 W in total. A modern desk with two monitors, a laptop charger, a phone charger and a router is well within that — but plug in a fan heater or space heater as well and you are into overload territory.

Use a good, undamaged extension lead

Buy a branded, fused 13 A extension lead with individually switched sockets. Unroll cable reels fully before use — a partially wound reel carrying a load will overheat inside the drum. Bin any lead with cracked casing, exposed conductors or a warm plug.

Charge laptops and batteries on a hard surface

Never charge a laptop, phone or power bank on a bed, sofa or carpet — heat cannot escape and lithium-ion cells can go into thermal runaway. Use the manufacturer's charger, not a random USB-C brick that arrived with something else.

Getting the workstation right

When you need a dedicated socket circuit

If you regularly trip an RCD when a laser printer, 3-D printer, kettle for the office, or a fan heater kicks in, the ring final is at its limit or has a fault. A dedicated 20 A radial circuit direct from the consumer unit removes the shared load and gives your equipment cleaner power.

Cable management under the desk

Keep flexes off sharp edges and out of chair-wheel paths. Do not run cables under carpets or rugs — heat cannot dissipate and the insulation breaks down over time. Cable trays, D-line and Velcro ties are cheap and prevent trip hazards and cable damage.

UPS and surge protection

For a workstation you cannot afford to lose, a small UPS (uninterruptible power supply) protects against brownouts and brief outages. A whole-home Type 2 surge protective device (SPD) at the consumer unit protects everything else from transient spikes caused by nearby lightning strikes or grid switching.

Don't do this in the home office

  • Daisy-chain one extension lead into another.
  • Plug a fan heater or oil-filled radiator into an extension lead.
  • Cover the extension lead with paper, files or a rug.
  • Leave laptops charging on a bed, sofa or duvet.
  • Ignore a hot plug, a discoloured socket face or a persistent hum from a charger.
  • Use unbranded USB-C or laptop chargers bought from online marketplaces — counterfeit chargers cause fires.
