Your premises
What do you need checked?
Routine testing
Discuss functional and full-duration testing, the existing test arrangements and the records needed for your system.
A failed light or exit sign
A fitting that does not illuminate, a fault indicator or a battery that will not last? Ask Paul about investigating the fault and quoting for repair or replacement.
Changes to your building
New partitions, a changed escape route or extra fittings may need a review of the lighting provision, not just a test of the existing lights.
A clear scope, useful records
- 1. Tell Paul about the premises. Building use, approximate fitting count, existing records and known faults help establish the work needed.
- 2. Agree the visit. Confirm access, the test scope and timing. Duration testing needs planning around occupancy and battery recharge.
- 3. Discuss the findings. Agree what test results and records are included, any limitations and how identified defects will be dealt with. Repairs are quoted separately where needed.
Testing alone does not establish that every escape route has adequate lighting. Layout, light levels and the premises fire risk assessment may also need review.
For businesses & property managers
Shops and offices, workshops, managed buildings and the common parts of flats can have different needs. A communal stairwell is not assessed in the same way as an individual home's ordinary lighting.
The Fire Safety Order requires emergency lighting for emergency routes and exits requiring illumination, and maintenance of fire-safety equipment. The responsible person remains responsible for the building's fire precautions.
Fire Safety Order 2005 — Articles 14 and 17Need the electrical installation checked too? See EICR Brighton. It is a separate inspection, not a replacement for emergency lighting tests.

FAQs
Emergency lighting testing — your questions
- Can you help with emergency lighting in Brighton?
- Contact Paul at All Cabling Limited to discuss testing, faulty emergency lights or changes to an existing system in Brighton and Hove. The visit and scope of work are agreed for your premises before work starts.
- Is emergency lighting testing the same as an EICR?
- No. An EICR assesses the condition of the electrical installation. Emergency lighting checks assess the emergency lighting system, including its operation when the normal lighting supply fails. An EICR is not a substitute for emergency lighting testing.
- How often should emergency lights be tested?
- Routine functional checks and periodic full-duration tests serve different purposes. The schedule should follow the applicable standards, system instructions and premises requirements, with results recorded. See the emergency lighting guide for the testing guidance.
- What should I send when asking for a quote?
- Send the premises address, building use, approximate number of emergency lights and exit signs, and any existing test records. Photos of failed fittings, test switches and labels are useful. If you do not know the details, Paul can discuss what needs checking.
- Does a successful test mean the whole building is fire compliant?
- No. A successful operational test does not by itself confirm that the layout, light levels or wider fire precautions are adequate. The responsible person retains their fire-safety duties, and the agreed inspection scope and any limitations matter.
